25 Nov: Roundtable briefing on Vienna conference on humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Weapons and the Protection of Civilians invites you to attend:
A roundtable briefing ahead of
the Third International Conference on the Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons
taking place in Vienna, Austria – 8-9 December 2014
11.30-13.00 Tuesday 25th November 2014 Room R, Portcullis House
Humanitarian organisations including UN relief agencies and the ICRC have made it clear that they would not have the capacity to respond adequately to the impacts of a nuclear weapon explosion. Yet nuclear weapons remain the only weapon of mass destruction that is not yet outlawed.
On 8-9 December, the Austrian government will host the third conference of a new international process to better understand the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons. The UK and the four other nuclear-armed members of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty have so far boycotted previous conferences and their participation in Vienna is unclear.
This roundtable aims to provide an update on the new international humanitarian initiative that is underway, and discuss the impacts on UK policy and practice on nuclear weapons.
Martin Caton MP, Chair of the APPG on Weapons and the Protection of Civilians
Sir Nick Harvey MP, former Minister of State for the Armed Forces
Dr Rebecca Johnson, Director, Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy, Steering Group Member, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)
All members of both Houses and their staff are welcome to attend.
